20 Questions with MUNK ONE
Monday February 09, 2009

He may look like a hard-ass, but Munk One (Juxtapoz #96) has a heart of gold. Not only does he admit to watching Ugly Betty (only “on occasion”) but he even took the time to answer our 20 Questions on his birthday. What a guy.

More importantly, what an artist. We’re sure you’ve had the opportunity to fully ingest our January feature interview with Munk One, but take the opportunity to uncover a few of this talented artist’s (dirty) little secrets in our 20 Questions. You may just learn a thing or two (like that he sleeps in the nude? That’s just the beginning…) Read on below:

What's the first thing you did when you woke up this morning?

I found some paper to write down the dream I had involving Selma Hayek (pre-baby) so that I wouldn’t forget about it. I then checked my email and the news and went back to sleep for another 30 minutes since today is my birthday.

Something about yourself the average person wouldn't guess?

I watch the show “Ugly Betty” on occasion. I have met Marilyn Manson. I can’t stand Southwestern colors and patterns.
I sleep in the nude? I don’t know, I don’t think I hide all that much.

If you had one day left on Earth, what’s left to be discovered?

I'd have the best BBQ with friends and family. Then I would swim in strawberry flavored Jell-o, skydive out of an airplane, record a rap song,  and anything else I haven't done until time runs out.

What is your first art-making memory as a kid?

Using crayons in school.

Do you need long periods of time alone, or are you energized by interaction?

I do better with interaction for sure, I enjoy listening to other peoples stories and ideas while I work but I also like being alone. I seem to get most work done late at night when it’s quite and everyone is sleeping.

Is being in the dark with the lights out frightening or comforting?

Comforting. It also depends on what you can hear or feel in the darkness and who exactly turned out the lights.

What's the most non-art involved activity you continually find yourself enjoying?

Eating. I get excited about my food, man...

Have you been to jail? If so, why? If not, why not?

Thankfully I have not been to “la pinta”. Just not on my 'to-do' list I guess. Although I did go on a “scare you out of gang life” field trip to prison as a kid. I wasn’t in a gang; I just wanted to see what it was like and hang out with my friends.

What kind of car do you drive?

A Chrysler 300 and a Honda Element. I’m not really a car guy; they just get me where I need to go.

What’s your biggest non-green inspired indulgence?

My computer, oh and eating animals that are on the brink of extinction. Nothing beats eating the last one ever of something.

What is the single most important thing you did to breakthrough as a career artist?

Work day and night for years on end.

Best hustle you ever pulled?

Being an artist. I love not having to drive to work and being excused from wearing “acceptable business attire”. Sometimes I work in nothing but boxers all day, just because I can. Haha.

Are you ever bored?

Yes, driving while in traffic. Or when I’m in a waiting room without reading material. I tend to be early for appointments even though I hate waiting so I usually have a book with me or answer emails to ward off boredom.

What excites you?

Music, danger, anything new, respectful debates, the unknown, new movies featuring Simon Pegg, sharing things with others.

2023 will look like . . . ?

Probably more of the same, but with much more pollution and less water. We will have brought back certain dinosaurs, or at least American Mastodons and the Tasmanian Wolf. Hopefully we have communication devices that don’t look as silly as the ones sticking out of your ears now. Our President will be brown after more of the Hispanic vote realizes its potential. Gay marriage will be legal, as it should be.

If you could have a drink with one artist, living or dead, who would it be?

Andy Warhol, he seems like he would be interesting to speak to.

Australia

Can’t stand:

Waking up early, asthma attacks, insomnia, crying babies, biting my tongue while eating, biting my tongue in general, and apathy.

Can't live without:

Air, DSL, sushi, caffeine, music, art, books, friends, family, love.

Words to live by:

Think, act, now.
