Construction. Destruction. The cyclical nature of creation is as organic as the decomposition of nature. For artist Valerie Hegarty, the joy of her work lies in its demolition rather than its making.

Characterized by canvases and antiques that have been burned, ripped, melted, torn, cracked, and even shot at, we can relate to Hegarty’s passionate destruction of untarnished pieces.

Her intentional destruction channels that never-ending struggle of man versus nature; our desire for and against civilization.
