Under Great White Northern Lights: White Stripes Film Shows at SXSW
Wednesday March 17, 2010 |
![]() SXSW is in full-swing and with it came the debut of the new White Stripes film by director Emmett Malloy. Already receiving rave reviews, Under Great White Northern Lights is a visual and emotional feature length film documenting The White Stripes making their way through Canada and culminating with their 10th anniversary show in Nova Scotia. The film documents the band playing shows all over Canada; from local bowling alleys, to city buses, and onward to the historic Savoy Theatre for the 10th Anniversary show. Along the way, they have some nice casual conversations about their ten years together, fire cannons, play some of their biggest songs together on stage, and even play a 'one note show.' The cameras were there to capture every waking moment.
The Los Angeles Times stated it “…can credibly be included alongside such canonical music docs as Gimme Shelter and Don’t Look Back.”
Director Emmett Malloy has made his name making great surf movies, managing rock phenom Jack Johnson, co-founding Brushfire Records, and directing some of musics most memorable videos. But perhaps Emmetts' most memorable work has been with Jack White and the White Stripes, a band he considers to be one of his biggest influences.
The cast includes: Jack White and Meg White (obviously) with producers Mike Sarkissian & Ian Montone, screenwriter Emmett Malloy, cinematography by Giles Dunning, and editing by Tim Wheeler.
