Storme: Sam Bassett Film Screening
Saturday July 10, 2010 |
![]() Juxtapoz contributing photographer Sam Bassett is also a filmmaker, documenting unique, even eccentric, people he comes into contact with. Stormé is based upon Viva Stormé DeLarverié, a civil rights legend, a big band singer, and teen horse jumper in the Ringling Brothers Circus. Born to a wealthy white father and black servant mother in the racially charged South, her difficult origins only fed her audacity and talent. The first woman to switch from women's to men's clothing in popular American entertainment, for fifty years Stormé traveled the world as a lead vocalist with a host of famous bands.
She became an American civil rights legend when she threw the first punch that started the Stonewall Riots, launching the Gay rights movement. Stormé is a tribute to individuality and the human spirit, featuring spectacular dance troupe Pocket Engine.
Sam Bassett’s Stormé will screen this Sunday, July 11th at Webster Hall in New York City as part of a featured event of the Quarterly Art Source (QAS).
