Playing with Motion on Walls

“Motion Institute”, a street piece recently completed by artist Replete in Leeds, depicts an abstracted female doing a kung fu cartwheel kick move.

The complete image is broken down into 10 frames of animation spread across a 12 fps time code and painted in spray paint across a four meter wall.

Replete says, “I wanted to utilize my animation skills learned in my time in video game production in a completely different way by incorporating them into my exterior work, strongly infusing the sense and mechanics of movement onto a flat surface.”

By overlapping the progressive frames, Replete creates the illusion of continuous movement.

The black bars of the time code serve to play with depth and contrast, as the portions of the dancer that overlap with the bars appear to be a negative image receding into the background.

Replete continues, “I then advanced the idea by creating a sculpture based on the concept in a piece entitled "To Arrest The Augmented 8th" which is a 36x14" canvas with sculpted and raised pieces of board, spraypainted to form a running girl coming to a halt spread across 8 interconnected levels. It's a constantly changing piece as the shadows shift with the angle of the sunlight and interior room lighting hitting the surfaces of the sculpture, which are raised incrementally across various heights.”

This creates the effect of the runner coming closer to the viewer as the animation progresses, contributing to the feel of movement across the canvas.
