Joe Iurato is a stencil artist from New Jersey who wrote us about “something very special and exciting that happened this weekend.” It involves an improbably proposition from NBC Sports Sunday Night Football and a reminder that digital design can never replace the craft of artwork.
“I had the pleasure of creating artwork for NBC Sports Sunday Night Football, for an incredible game that wound up making history,” Lurato tells us. “I think what makes it most special for me is knowing that even with all of the computer generated effects existing on the planet, people still look to hand crafted artwork. It's a nice dose of hope.”
“I was asked to create 3 multilayer stencils for the ‘Rivalry of the Decade’ game (New England Patriots Vs. Indianapolis Colts) Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and the SNF Logo. They’d be used for a short piece the producers were calling ‘Quarterbacks Of The Decade.’ ”

“The pieces were shown several times throughout game, mostly as transitions during highlight reels and replay TD passes. I spray painted the stencils on acetate so NBC could photograph them against a green screen and combine them with computer-generated effects in the final cut. I sent a final composite along with each individual layer sprayed on its own sheet of acetate so they could also be shot separately - this allowed the images to ‘rebuild’ themselves quickly on screen.
Check out the 2 minute video Iurato slapped together, showing a handful of photos from the process as well as some clips from the game.
