Usually one tries to avoid water damage, especially with artwork. That is, unless the art pieces are for Mexico’s Underwater Museum.

18 months in the making, the world’s largest underwater museum recently received its first exhibits.

The Mexican Caribbean ocean now plays host to a series of life-size sculptures on display in Mexico’s Underwater Museum. A total of 400 statues will be lowered down to the bottom in the following months.

Located in the National Marine Park, the Underwater Museum aims to raise environmental awareness by creating an artificial reef. Scientists hope the statues will attract young algae that will give them a vivid color.

The project was founded by Jaime Gonzalez Cano of The National Marine Park, Roberto Diaz of The Cancun Nautical Association and renowned British sculptor Jason deCaires Taylor.
