Dirty. Covert. Dangerous. What do meth labs bring to your mind? In a touring show, a bit of Black Acid Co-op, the meth lab installation by New York artists Jonah Freeman and Justin Lowe showed bit of itself in Miami.

What is it about meth labs that make such an intriguing installation?

Black Acid Co-op is an immense, labor-intensive, maniacally contrived walk-through environment, which we got a view of while in Miami at Deitch Projects’ indoor showing as part of the Wynwood Walls show.

Black Acid Co-op
is the third incarnation of Hello Meth Lab in the Sun, which opened last spring in Marfa, Texas.

“Like Alice’s rabbit hole, Black Acid Co-op will take you as deep as you want to go, especially once you recognize the careful attention to detail throughout this mammoth effort, reported the New York Times upon the entire show’s unveiling at Deitch late this summer. “Nothing is accidental. Its disparate spaces sustain ever-closer readings and parsings, like a series of archaeological sites in perpetual excavation, and there are frequent cross-references.

Twisted tubes, traces of acrid residue, and ripped open boxes of Sudafed triggers a simultaneously curious and fearful reaction in onlookers. This taboo culture is one rarely seen, but widely known of in American culture. Black Acid Co-op continues to provoke thought, even after multiple showing across the country.
