Label 228: A Street Art Project
Thursday, 17 September 2009

The movement of artistry on priority mail labels, officially named Label 228, could go unnoticed with a cursory glance because of their small surface area. But their mobility (they stick anywhere), versatility (they offer a plain, white canvas), and accessibility (the things are free!), has allowed them to become omnipresent in the modern urban schema.

Label 228, published by Soft Skull Press is an accumulation of innovative works by artists all over the world, compiled by camden noir through an open call to artists.

camden noir was decidedly liberal with his specifications for this book: anything goes. And he got everything. Flipping through this book will give you a sense of the level of innovation that arises when artists are simply given an open and free platform of expression.

Next time you are cruising down the sidewalk or waiting for the bus, check out the back of stop signs, the swinging door of newspaper dispensers, or the corner of store front windows and you’re likely to spot one of these transient works of art.
