Derek Gores
does to paper figures what many of us do to ourselves or to those around us: pick apart portions of found materials to create works of art. His collages are intricate studies of his contrasting interests in the natural beauty of the figure, the angular design aesthetics of fashion (and machinery), and a fearless sense of play.

His collage portrait series utilizes recycled magazines, labels, and found materials to create works on canvas.

“The subjects are just figures and objects in a space, influenced by heroes Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele and Max Ernst,” the artist states. “I'm not interested in heavy concepts- I make something simple and let the parts combine in the head, reacting with any history the viewer brings to the table.

“The mixed media drawings have a similar ambiguity, except I use speed and water to detour perception. When all goes well, I might create a real experience, instead of just a picture of an experience.”
