Clouded Apollo is a Stunner

Chloe Early’s (Juxtapoz #99) new solo show, Clouded Apollo, is beautiful. You know you have a winning combination when, in the midst of a recession hitting artists especially hard, your show still almost sells out by opening day.

In her paintings Chloe Early creates a fantastical landscape, an urban utopia where strange and wonderful things happen.

For this exhibition ‘Clouded Apollo’, she has referenced a variety of images and contexts. A female figure twists and turns through time, suspended in an interior world of opulence and beauty; patterns and pillars, chandeliers and roses. Outside we see far away skylines, buildings raised and falling, destruction and tanks. The urban backdrop remains but has taken on the scale of a toy town, someone is playing at war; it is distant and removed.

The actions of the aerial performer that Early has chosen to paint strike a balance between performance and introspection as the figures defy gravity in an obvious act of showmanship but ultimately remain self contained and unaware of the viewer.

Darker and more somber, these paintings are a development away from her recent carnival theme and painted on a variety of surfaces: metal, linen and perspex. Chloe layers landscapes, objects and figures to create a multi-dimensional world we are passing through catching glimpses.
