The latest and final show at SQFT Gallery, Couplets, featuring new work by Aurora Robson and Lisa Solomon recently drew our attention. Aurora and Lisa collaborated across the country (Aurora is based in Brooklyn, Lisa in Oakland) on color schemes and sizes, to create a new body of work that elegantly compliments each other.
Aurora's pieces, like Greenola (shown) are junk mail collages. Interested in taking things that would typically be traveling on a downward trajectory, she aims to change their fate. What others might see as garbage, she sees as art supplies.
Lisa's series focuses on representing something frightening and ugly as something beautiful, as she renders the chemical structures of harmful environmental toxins using doilies.
