A.K.A: a solo show with Alex Young
Wednesday March 17, 2010 |
![]() Alex Young’s artistic output can be fundamentally divided into two loosely identified cannons: portraiture and illustration. This rising star of the UK Contemporary Art movement will show off his newest works in A.K.A, a solo show with Alex Young.
Exploring a variety of media and form, whilst drawing from a rich reservoir of influences that ranges from classical to contemporary art disciplines, Young seems to be an interesting new artist on the scene.
His fluid and finely detailed pointillist style portraits - reminiscent of the photorealist master Chuck Close - are meticulously rendered in spray paint and then lavished with fine illustration detail and multi-layered symbolism to elicit a multitude of narrative strands.
In contrast, Young’s heavily stylized illustrations are driven by a discernibly pop surrealist manifesto: that is to create something purely based on aesthetic, or as Young would put it, that’s simply “Rad for rad’s sake.”
