A Look at Dennis Hopper: The Photographer

There has been an outpouring of sympathy and reflection over the passing of filmmaker, actor, and artist Dennis Hopper. Fellow actor and mentor James Dean encouraged Hopper’s interest in photography and the rest, as they say, is history.

Hopper was a unique man, full of confidence, talent, and at times, paradoxes. His participation in Hollywood (before he was blacklisted for about 8 years) granted his unique access to some of its brightest stars in the golden 1960s.

From Jane Fonda to Paul Newman, Andy Warhol to Jasper Johns, Hopper caught some serious talent in their prime on film. Perhaps it was his own experience in the spotlight, but Hopper’s eye for lighting, placement, and timing made for striking images.

Hopper also pursued and collected fine art. A successful sculptor and painter, the artist held an appreciation for all things artistic.

The Los Angeles' Museum of Contemporary Art is planning to mount a survey of Hopper's art career in July.
