This week in China kicked off the first edition of Art Basel Hong Kong, the world's most famed art fair that has already taken over Basel, Switzerland in June each year and Miami in December. This particular edition focuses primarily on Asia and Asia-Pacific galleries, given us at Juxtapoz a chance to see new talent and new artists that we have yet to see in person. This past weekend we stopped by Martha Otero Gallery for the opening of Pedro Matos’ first Los Angeles solo exhibition. Building Castles Made of Sand featuring a new series of oil paintings on canvas and Azulejo panels - a traditional Portuguese medium of hand-painted, tin-glazed, ceramic tile work. The third installment of Suggestivism, a critically acclaimed traveling exhibition curated by Nathan Spoor, takes on a new form under the wing of Mondo Pop Gallery in Rome. The exhibition hangs on two floors of the Roman Aquarium, a classical building which hosts graffiti installations regularly in the basement.

Julie Mehretu's large-scale, mixed media paintings create a dizzying field of layered landscapes to construct colorful and complex and lines. Throughout her painting process Julie will add architectural and geometric sketches in ink, smudges of acrylic paint and then sand everything down to create a smooth finish. We are enjoying the fun, imaginative wheatpastes of French artist Lavalet. Lavalet began making the site-specific pieces around France last year, coming up with creative and entertaining ways for his characters to interact with their surroundings. He also just opened an exhibition at NUNC ! Grenoble if you are in France.

By the time Gavin Watson was 14, he was fully immersed as a skinhead in the world of 2 Tone and documenting his friends and brother with his camera. The book, Skins, based on these early pictures has been widely popular and considered by many as the 'most important photographic record of this unique subculture.' Another series of photos, Neville, follows his brother through his teens into adulthood. This morning we look through some of these pictures and their raw and honest youthful energy.

Robert Beatty is an artist and musician. He plays music through his band Hair Police, his solo project Three Legged Race and contributions to C. Spencer Yeh's Burning Star Core. He also has crafted an enormous amount of cover art for various acts including ONeohtrix Point NEver, Peaking Lights and Real Estate. His art is reminiscent of airbrushed 1970s rock albums but he has utilized computer-manipulated collage and hand-drawn art to bring a modern touch to the style...

The historic center of the city of Graz is located on the River Mur in Austria is home to the Kunsthaus Graz, a building designed by Sir Peter Cook and Colin Fournier in 2003. The 2,500 square meter space is dedicated for changing contemporary art exhibitions, functions and events. The strange, blob-like, blue bubble blends with a heritage-protected part of the building and uses 930 computercon trolled light sources under the building's skin to create a 45-meter display that allows the building to communicate with its environment....

With a stunning backdrop, 79 floors above Hong Kong, we attended the special pop-up gallery show of Retna and Keith Haring tonight in Hong Kong during the Art Basel festivities. Featuring iconic Haring works mixed with new works by Los Angeles-based Retna, the works played in unison of a both an exploration of language and unique character construction.

The natural and the mystical live in perfect harmony in Delia Evin's dreamy world of hazy blues and fire reds. A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, Evin deploys watercolors with remarkable finesse and attention to detail to render her fantastical visions. Delia Evin is a freelance illustrator based in Brooklyn, New York.
