Converse Wall to Wall Hong Kong: IDT Crew

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
This past week, Juxtapoz took a trip to Hong Kong to both celebrate the inaugural Art Basel Hong Kong art fair, as well as spend time with the Converse team and their curated guest list of artists for their Wall to Wall Hong Kong project. Over the past few years, Converse has worked with artists from around the world to create over twenty Wall to Wall projects throughout Europe and North America. For Hong Kong, Converse brought artists from Berlin, China, Brazil, and France to complete the project. Today, we look at the wall completed by the Shenzen-based IDT Crew.

Preview: Lindsey Carr, Jeremy Hush, Frank Gonzales, Eric Siador, and Glenn Arthur @ Thinkspace Gallery, Culver City

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
Thinkspace is pleased to present Curioso a group exhibition featuring new work by gallery artists Jeremy Hush, Lindsey Carr, and Frank Gonzales. These artists’ respective, and unmistakably distinct, practices explore contemporary representations of the natural and animal worlds. Their imagery is derived uniquely, relying on a combination of observation, historical 19th century natural history and botanical references, and their personal experiences of nature drawn in sharp relief against their immersion in the urban.

Music Video: The Vein "Magma"

Music // Friday, May 31, 2013
Well this is a way to get the Friday going. Dvein has art directed and created this great short music video for the band The Vein and their track "Magma" that reminds us that taking drugs, looking at a portrait of Da Vinci, trying to mix paint, and then walking on a frozen tundra does wonders for the imagination.

How to Make a 1953 Volkswagen Beetle into a Sphere by Ichwan Noor

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
Art Basel Hong Kong, the inaugural edition of Basel in Asia, had a ton of sculpture and installation works throughout the fair. One of the ones we loved especially was Jakarta-based sculptor Ichwan Noor's transforming, fusing, morphing five vintage 1953 Volkswagen Beetles into these crazy installed spheres. This one was in the Mondecor Jakarta Gallery booth, and on sale for $88k.

600 Mount Fuji Sunrises by Yu Yamauchi

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
Yu Yamauchi spent five months a year, for four years living in a hut near the summit of Mt. Fuji. Everyday for those five months he would get up at the crack of dawn to photograph the sunrise from the same location. The result is a stunning series of photographs, aptly titled Dawn, of the Earth waking up. What is most incredible about the series is how different one photo looks from the next. "This space, 'above the clouds,' exists far from the ground where we live our daily lives. It is also a space between the earth and the universe." We may have to watch the sunrise this weekend...

Kimsooja's "To Breathe - A Mirror Woman"

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
South Korean-born artist Kimsooja has had a long, intense career full of installations, performances, photography, videos and site-specific project. This particular installation from 2006 is at the Palace de Cristal in Madrid. Exploiting the structure of the building while also leaving it intact, Kimsooja installed a mirror on the floor to multiply and unify the original architectural space. A translucent diffraction grating film also covers the glazed dome and wall of the crystal palace. Awesome.

Watch: Thee Oh Sees "Toe Cutter-Thumb Buster" by John Strong

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
We love music videos that are nicely crafted, nicely shot, short stories. Thee Oh Sees' video for their song "Toe Cutter-Thumb Buster" directed by John Strong is exactly that.

Illustrations and Paintings by Martine Johanna

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
The Purple Book is a collection of illustrations and literary excerpts exploring symbolism and sensuality in contemporary art and features some wonderful artists. Today we though we would share with you the illustrations of Dutch artist Martine Johanna who is featured in the book. Her work consists of fine line drawings and bizarre dream-like paintings.

The Work of Fred Tomaselli

Juxtapoz // Friday, May 31, 2013
The SFMOMA is temporarily closing its doors in a couple of days for the construction of their new expansion. We took a last walk through yesterday evening as they count down the days and while doing so happened upon a painting by Fred Tomaselli, something we seemed to have missed the last time we were there. So, inspired, this morning we thought we would bring you a collection of the Brooklyn-based artist's work.
