About a month ago, I headed out with Stecyk and my lady to Santa Barbara, to spend the afternoon with Mr Shawn Stussy. The premise? Just talk about stuff. Nothing concrete, just a day with Shawn Stussy. Don't mind the S/Double logos.
Stussy let us take some shots at his new fort, we did an interview that you can find in the newest issue of Juxtapoz (Issue #103, August. Get a digital subscription or live-in-hand subscription if you want the whole piece), and we had some really, really good Vietnamese food that I will be hitting up again next time I pass through. And here went the visit...
We had to stop at Samy's (two actually, one in LA and one in SB) to find some Super 8 film so my lady could shoot the interview. That video is coming soon.

This was our first encounter with the fort. We see boxes, so I figure we are at the right place.

And then my instinct is confirmed. Nobody can write like that, except Mr Stussy.

Shawn had his uncle's work, Jan Stussy, laying around. Jan was a leading painter in his day, and a proper beatnik. I loved the work. There was a lot around the studio/adult fort.

Loved the lights. The entire studio was exactly what you want a classic designer to have. Clean aesthetic, through and through.

There was a lot of un-packing to do. Shawn said that some of this stuff he has had for over 10 years... and now they are in full use once again.

Still getting this room together. But somebody has a bike. I don't, so I appreciate those that do.

Stecyk and Mahoney, who stopped by, taking some photos. Great to have them along to help out. Once the interview started, Stecyk could do his thing.

Piles of inspiration.

Stecyk at work. Getting the surfboard shot. Iconic.

That's the shot.

And this is Shawn's normal writing. I would wear this on a shirt.

More piles of inspiration. I loved how clean everything was. Everything in its right place.

Stussy at his desk near the end of the interview. That is the back of my head. Again, check out those cool Jan Stussy paintings on the wall behind. The work was amazing, really set a good mood at the studio.

And if you were to walk in the studio from the front door, you get some Stussy classics, and another Jan Stussy piece. Everything with a purpose.

Our gracious hosts, Paula and Shawn. The Super 8 footage shot outside was great. I could move to SB in the summer. Perfect day.

Back from lunch, I caught this folder. How classic is this? Just your typical folder, but with the handwriting we all know and have worn. Not bad...

My Amanda and Shawn doing some filming in the studio. There are some things happening in Stussy land, but you will see all that later. Read the interview. Go to ShawnStussy.com.

There's a logo.
Thank you to Shawn Stussy, Paula, Stecyk, and Mahoney for the good day. Check the full interview in the August Juxtapoz issue, #103. Or, get a digital subscription so you can put the thing on your iPhone, BlackBerry, laptop, etc. You know what to do.
