CRAZY 4 CULT 3D
July 16 - August 8, 2009
Last night was the festive opening of Los Angeles' hipster fave Crazy 4 Cult 3D, the annual group exhibit curated by Gallery 1988's LA gallery (also in San Francisco). The basic idea is that the gallery begins curating a year or more out, asking artists to create cult classic-based artwork drawn from a select list of movies. I'd been hearing about the buzz for the last couple of years and decided it was time to take the plunge, wade through the massive line and crowd and engage in the fine display of work until my mind went numb from overload. As it turns out, there was no overload, just a really nice group of art lovers and more clever turns on the ole film phraseology than you can shake a proverbial stick at.
If you want a more comprehensive look at the exhibit, click here ( http://1988crazy4cult3.blogspot.com ). The gallery's blog ( http://www.g1988.blogspot.com )has a lot of fun updates and behind the scenes look at the setup and comments as the new work poured in. Many thanks for the hospitality!

Ana Bagayan's "Silence of the Lambs" tribute

Bob Dob's tribute to "Reservoir Dogs"

Lola's tribute to Willy Wonka
Greg Simkins / Amy Sol's tribute to "The Neverending Story"
Dan May's "Edward Scissorhands"

Joe Vaux delivers Ming from "Flash Gordon"
Dave MacDowell, seriously, just look at it...
Ellen Schinderman's insane needlepoint of Buddy Christ and tribute to George Carlin

Eric Fortune and Jason Limon's side by side tributes to "Army of Darkness"

There was a crew from G4 magazine doing interviews, pretty cool guys, got a lot of good footage

Another crowd favorite, Kelly Vivanco's take on the "Office Space" stapler antics

Ken Garduno knocks out a classy "Pulp Fiction" piece

It's difficult to really get the brilliance of this Dan Lyderson piece without seeing it in person. But hopefully these close-up shots help a little...

You see what I mean, right? The show just goes on and on like this. Truly an amazing showcase of talent and thought went into every piece there.

And since you've made it this far into the blog, I should show you my own take on the pre-history of Wonka's hat, as it receives the call to service. For a larger view, click here (or view at: http://nathanspoor.com/images/NS_Waiting_lg.jpg ).
Thanks and see you guys around!
