One dress, one year: The Uniform Project

One dress, one year: The Uniform Project

Back in June, we filled you on the unique sustainable fashion challenge called The Uniform Project. Designed to be an exercise in creativity combined with the challenges that come with wearing the same dress day, after day, after day. After day. 365 days to be exact. Sheena Mathieken, the originator of The Uniform Project, wanted to create an impact in fashion that explored a positive, unconventional idea. So, she decided to pick the most popularized item in a woman’s wardrobe–the Little Black Dress–and make it her uniform for a year, as a way to prove that if you’re resourceful enough, you can do a lot with very little. Coincidentally, wearing the same dress every day for a year means you get to have a ton more fun with accessories than you normally would.

Sheena Mathieken hopes that The Uniform Project will call awarness to childrens educational charities, including The Akanksha Foundation in India.

Rihanna drops the vid for her new single "Wait Your Turn"

Rihanna drops the vid for her new single "Wait Your Turn"

Little Miss Sunshine is back! Except, this time she’s really dark and donning an eye patch.

Embattled singer Rihanna is back with her first single since bouncing back from her summer scandal with Chris Brown, and has just released the video for “Wait Your Turn”. Decidedly darker than her previous fare, the clip features shots of the singer in gritty tunneled terrain, as well as on an overhead bridge, in a cathedral, and on a city rooftop. The girl gets around! Shot entirely in black and white, Rihanna’s mixes her signature fashion-model inspired poses and model walk with some tough-girl arm movement, as if she’s gunning for the camera. And, as always, her swag is on point. She’s rocking everything from a hooded Garreth Pugh-inspired ensemble to shredded jeans and a fur. And an EYE PATCH!! Only Rhi Rhi can get away with making an eye patch look so good… the girl is a fashion goddess!

Adiam Dymott

This 26 year old beauty hails from Stockholm but her parents come by way of Asmara, that capital city of Eritrea in Africa, if your’e wondering where she gets her unique look not usually found in Sweden. Adiam got her start as a receptionist at a record company and ended up spending more time in the studio than answering the phones. One thing led to the next and her self titled debut album on Razzia Records is filled with soulful pop melodies, heavy hip hop beats, and rock and roll. As a self proclaimed “MTV-child” she credits The Notorious B.I.G, Wu Tang Clan, Nirvana, and Garbage as early influences, not bad.

Vans is going classy for Spring/Summer 2010 with their take on the spectator, the "Sophie".

Vans is going classy for Spring/Summer 2010 with their take on the spectator, the "Sophie".

As a New Yorker, when it comes to droppin some change for a new pair of shoes each season/month/week (but that’s only if I’ve hit some really good overtime at work), the number one thing I look for is a pair that I can conquer the city streets in. This explains the overabundance of flat-soled boots and kicks upon kicks in my shoe collection, but every now and then a wild card pair will find its way in. You know, a pair of random stiletto heeled sandals, or a sexy set of lace-up boots. This past summer though, my wild card was less about the heels and all about the oxfords and spectators. This trend, approved by celebs like Natalie Portman and the Olsen twins, is perhaps the best encapsulation of style meets function, and is versatile enough to work with everything from jeans to dresses. Need I say more?

The shoe will come in three colorways, including the classic saddle-shoe black and white.

LFW9.20main

The good people over at M·A·C were kind enough to share their facecharts from the Spring/Summer 2010 shows during London Fashion Week. Today’s facechart is brought to you by Antonio Berardi, who’s show took place on Sunday, September 20th. According to M·A·C Artist, Val Garland, who conceptualized the look, “Boudoir goes into battle . Most girls have this modern Marlene Deitrich eye with graphic Samurai lines. Some have a soft degradé texture upon texture lip.” I absolutely love the modernized, warrior feel this makeup look has. It’s a perfect compliment to the designer’s neutral color scheme and airy fabric selection.
