Dear Juxtapoz,
Museum Memories.
Several of the most intense memory building moments I have had in art museums have happened in darkened unlit rooms. Where some sophisticated invention of video, with slices of sound and sparks of light, coupled with my peering lens of self discovery has transported me to a new void. Once in the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art, I was treated to a room so black i could not see my fingers. The experience was based on fear as I recall, fear of running into the wall, of my cell phone going off ruining the attraction for anyone else that was as I blind as I was. But the tipping point of the installation was a series of animal growls that seemingly came from the air I was breathing. These guttural sounds together with panther eyes that illuminated on a back wall crystallized my entire trip to Chicago. I also met Heath Ledger out there, but alas......It was this intense 2 minute sight and sound invasion in a lonely black room that I still retain as "the moment".
The video I included reminds of that moment. I stumbled onto this online, but had I found this, I'm confident a similar experience would have been had. To experience it, the viewer runs in place, the motion of running advances the video. The video is all h9ot and old looking and has Marilyn Monroe in it, doing really lollipoppy stuff to a Coke bottle.
Its good all around. best, Jeben
