I made my way to the SF Zine Fest in Golden Gate Park on Saturday, not because I wanted to spend an August afternoon in 50 degree mist, but just to check out what is going on in the 'zine world these days and you can't beat anything that is free and will occupy a few hours of your day. After a stop at Amoeba to look at some CDs (what are those the kids say . . . ), I got myself to Lincoln and 9th with an amazingly close parking spot, and had my lady take some iPhone shots because apparently iPhones have apps that make your photos look all Polaroid, or '70s, or Holga, or black and white, etc, etc . . .
All and all, I liked the energy going off at Zine Fest. Good people, good art, some good grassroots vibe (I refuse to say DIY anymore, I think we should all ban the use of this abbreviation, its like Green Day ruined it for everyone, and I don't even know what that means but you know what I mean?), and just another really venue way to see good artwork and a creative culture.

Zine madness, from the streets.

I actually don't remember this, but the picture was on the phone, so its up.

This whole area was cool, a booth dedicated to Oakland and East Bay zines, graffiti, street culture, poster art, inks, pens, pins, etc. They were called Endless Canvas (EndlessCanvas.com), and it got me a little juiced up because I still have major East Bay pride and sometimes I forget how goddamn cool Oakland is, so I bought a few things . . . they have a good blog, so check it out.

More good zine work.
Right before heading to Zine Fest, I stopped by Giant Robot to check out some books and the show they have up, and the work was done by Theo Ellsworth, and really talented guy. I was into the show, and BOOM, there was Theo, a half-hour later, at the Zine Fest at his booth showing more of his really good work . I wasn't 100% sure it was actually Theo, so we sort of said "Giant Robot" loudly around the booth, and when we saw the ears perk up, I said hello.

His work looks like this... Theo's website looks like this: ArtCapacity.com. Go to Giant Robot in SF to see his stuff too...

Then we made our way over to the reason we stopped by, my lady's co-worker, Geoff Vasile, makes some really good zines, and he was there sharing a booth with Sarah Oleksyk, and she makes cool screen prints and zines. I think they may have been enjoying themselves greatly with the help of some plastic bottled tonic. They have sites too . . . Geoffvasileisreal.blogspot.com and Saraholeksyk.com.
Off you go...
